On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla., will participate in the fifth-annual Museum Day, presented by Smithsonian magazine. A celebration of culture, learning and the dissemination of knowledge, Smithsonian’s Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based properties. Doors will be open free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors at museums and cultural institutions nationwide, including the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Last year, upwards of 200,000 people attended Museum Day, with all 50 states plus Puerto Rico represented by over 900 participating museums, including 84 Smithsonian affiliate museums. This year, the magazine expects to attract over 1,000 museums.
“Institutions such as the World Golf Hall of Fame value Museum Day as a wonderful opportunity to highlight what we each have to offer to Smithsonian magazine’s audience,” said Jack Peter, Sr. Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “The Hall of Fame is always proud to be part of the program and is hopeful that individuals take this great offering at our museum as well as others around the country.”
The World Golf Hall of Fame offers thousands of square feet of exhibits telling the history of golf and honoring the greats of the game through artifacts, photos, videos and interactive exhibits. The museum is currently featuring special member exhibit, “Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory.” Guests will find rich storytelling alongside more than 400 artifacts and 300 images as they wind through a variety of set pieces designed to reflect the different eras and locations significant to Hope’s life, including England, Cleveland, New York, Hollywood, Palm Springs, Washington D.C. and sites of USO shows around the world.
